“Everything happens for a reason” This is one of the many motto’s that play an important role in Monique Post’s life. Monique is a talented young woman who, after searching for a number of years, finally received her diagnosis of Aspergers (an autism related condition) in 2008. Her autism is an important factor that she incorporates in her life as a creative entrepreneur (photography). Monique grew up on the international campus of Atlantic College in St.Donats on the South Wales coast in the UK. The arts have been an integral part of her life since early childhood. Her father is an artist and was Head of the Art Department at Atlantic College. The campus and grounds are situated around a medieval castle overlooking the Bristol Channel. It was in this inspiring international, multicultural environment that Monique spent her youth. This is where she lived and studied until she was eighteen and was awarded the International Baccalaureate diploma. She subsequently moved, after a gap year in a documentary filmmaking studio in Belgium, to the Netherlands to study at the St.Joost College of Art in Breda. After a very demanding period but having obtained her propedeuse (Foundation Course), she transfered to the School of the Arts in Utrecht (HKU) where she studied Theatre Design. In 2009 she was awarded her Bachelor of Arts degree with Honours and has been an independent entrepreneur ever since.   As far back as she can remember Monique felt that she was different to everyone around her. It is only during her period of study in the Netherlands that she embarked on a journey of wanting to find the source of her feeling different. She will never forget the moment in 2008 when she was given the diagnosis of autism, ‘What a relief. Finally I knew the reason for my feeling so different.’ People with and without autism react with surprise when Monique tells them she has autism. She seems not to comply with the stereotypical view that people have of how a person with autism functions in soceity. This sense of being different has made Monique curious about herself. Why does she feel so different yet appear so ‘normal’ to others? How has she managed to learn, develop to this degree and compensate? Her photography and lectures are helping her find answers to those questions and others. Monique is very creative and enterprising. In addition to running Post Productions for her photography and giving lectures, she has regular exhibitions of her work and cooperates with interviews and books on autism. She also writes poetry and is in the process of writing her autobiography. Her main motivation in this is to make autism more known and understood. In her lectures and presentations Monique conveys in an inspiring manner how it is to survive in the world today for a person with autism. She describes what you can personally achieve despite a handicap, about utilising chances that come your way, as well as the process of thinking in a different manner. Based on personal knowledge and observation she makes the connection between the world with and without autism in a refreshing and open manner. She has given presentations at different congresses and seminars including Het Nationaal Congres Autisme 2011 and the Fontys In-Service Autisme Congres.
